Underground utility mapping (UUM) in Malaysia is the process of detecting, locating, and recording buried pipes, cables, and infrastructure beneath the ground surface. Using geophysical methods such as Ground Penetrating Radar (GPR) and electromagnetic pipe-and-cable locators, surveyors produce a UDM Plan — a map showing the position, depth, and type of subsurface utilities. UUM is governed by standards set by JUPEM (Jabatan Ukur dan Pemetaan Malaysia) under Director General Circular 1/2006.

Non-metallic utilities such as plastic water pipes or unmarked fibre ducts are harder to detect than metallic ones. The depth, dielectric properties of surrounding material, and the utility’s material all influence result quality. For this reason, professional UUM combines GPR with electromagnetic locators and cross-references existing utility records where available.
Detection depth varies by method and site conditions. Electromagnetic pipe-and-cable locators can detect metallic utilities at depths typically between 1 to 5 metres under standard soil conditions. GPR can penetrate to depths of 3 to 10 metres, but practical detection depth is reduced in wet, clay-rich, or highly mineralised soils. A completed UUM survey produces a UDM Plan (Underground Utility Detection and Mapping Plan) showing the detected utilities plotted onto a base map with their horizontal positions and estimated depths. A topographic survey records the surface of the land — ground levels, terrain features, and visible structures — to produce contour and elevation data. Underground utility mapping focuses entirely on what is beneath the surface: the location, depth, and type of buried pipes, cables, and ducts. For most construction and infrastructure projects in Malaysia, both surveys are required and are often conducted together by the same surveyor to produce an integrated site dataset that covers above-ground and below-ground conditions simultaneously.
